Matt Sakatani Roe is a cinematographer for film and television whose most recent work can be seen in Netflix’s Purple Hearts, a dramatic musical romance directed by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum and starring Sofia Carson and Nicholas Galitzine. Purple Hearts premiered at #1 on Netflix with the highest weekly viewership of any film in 2022 and quickly ascended into the Netflix All Time Top 10 list ranking at #7. Also released in 2022, Sneakerella, a modern day musical adaptation of Cinderella directed by Rosenbaum premiered on Disney +. The film was nominated for 11 Emmy Awards including best Cinematography and winning for best Fiction Feature film Special.

Some of Matt’s film works include 2017 Sundance select Nostalgia, starring Jon Hamm, Ellen Burstyn, Catherine Keener, and Bruce Dern. The film earned him praise from Variety for having an impressive feature film debut as a DP.

In 2019, he began the year shooting the Off-Broadway feature adaptation of the play The God Committee with Writer/Director, Austin Stark, and cast Kelsey Grammer, Julia Stiles, and Colman Domingo. The film premiered at the 2021 Tribeca film festival.

Matt's work has also been showcased in 2016 Tribeca selected series Relationship Status, the 2019 reboot of Beverly Hills, 90210, BH90210, which was the summers highest rated primetime premiere and FOX’s most-streamed premiere ever.

In addition to film and TV, Matt has traveled the world to shoot commercial campaigns for renowned brands.  Alongside campaigns, he has photographed music artists from the likes of Lady Gaga and Imagine Dragons, resulting in a nomination for the highly coveted short form cinematography award Camerimage in Poland.

Currently, Matt is working on the feature film My Dead Friend Zoe starring Sonequa Martin-Green, Natalie Morales, Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman for Director Kyle Hausmann-Stokes
